“I have always been drawn to and loved working with wood since taking over my parent’s garage as a workshop at the age of eight. On leaving school I trained at Parnham House and the RCA before setting up our London workshop which specialised in designing and making custom contemporary furniture and installations. At the same time we developed BendywoodŽ which was showcased in the Stirling prize winning Laban Centre.

I moved my workshop to the woods in Dorset ten years ago in order to focus on traditional hand skills, green woodworking and running courses, as well as occasional craft based television work such as the BBC Mastercrafts series.
I particularly enjoy learning, sharing and developing hand skills in wood and try to encourage our students to focus on the process as much as the end product.”

When judging this year’s entries I shall be looking for well-honed skills and knowledge that have been developed through repetition and practice, as well as an understanding of the risk taking involved in craftsmanship and innovative design.

I shall also be looking for pieces that demonstrate an in-depth understanding of, and relationship with the material in hand.”

Judge’s Statement

Gold Award - Katie Lake
Katie Lake is my choice for the Gold Award. Katie's skill as both a maker and designer have continued to grow since winning the Silver Award in 2012. I was particularly impressed with her ability to combine contemporary technology with traditional techniques and well-honed hand skills that leave the 'makers mark'. Her individual and often playful and humorous designs are a joy. Katie successfully manages the difficult yet essential business skill of balancing one-off commissions/exhibition pieces and batch production whilst skilfully selecting the best processes for the job in hand.

Silver Award - Richard Kennedy
Richard Kennedy's elegant bowls struck me as the highly accomplished result of practised technique and measured risk taking. One slip and days (if not weeks) of work could be ruined. The combination of thin wall turning and piercing demonstrates an in depth understanding and intimate relationship with the material and resultant form. Richard's intention to experiment with larger scale and enclosed pieces will I am sure prove both technically challenging and fruitful whilst the excellent photography is a good example to all of us of the importance photography can play in effectively presenting and promoting your work.

Silver Award - Sandra Adams
Sandra Adams has practised and refined her technique for the Wave Series and the end results demonstrate her deep understanding and affinity for both the wood and the technically challenging staining work. The locally and personally sourced (or found) principle is an integral part of Sandra's philosophy and I am sure this and the inspiration of local landscapes adds an added connection to the work for prospective purchasers.

It has been a real pleasure to judge the the 2013 Finalists. All six deserve huge congratulations for their success in the public vote and for the technical ability and creative standards of all of their work. They could all easily have been selected as overall winner, however as this was not allowed I have had to think long and hard about which best fitted the judging criteria. I particularly enjoyed studying the statements and viewing the websites to gain a more in-depth understanding of each entry and to see the diversity of style and approach. I hope that seeing the work of the Finalists may inspire others to take up a skilled craft as a livelihood - or for the pleasure of it.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 64 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
