The craft&design Prize at Potfest in the Pens 2013

Ian Roberts with craft&design editor Angie Boyer
Ceramics by Ian Roberts

craft&design were delighted to once again sponsor the competition at Potfest in the Pens at the beginning of August. The idea is that the potters are given a theme for the competition ahead of the event and they make a piece which goes on display at the show. This year they were all asked to make a clock - to reflect the passing of time, with craft&design celebrating our 30 years and Potfest seeing its 20th birthday.

Ian Roberts makes clocks from clay, that's exactly what he does - so he knew he had to come up with something rather special for the competition. And he did just that - Ian's 'me dad's dad's clock' was so tall that it literally stood head and shoulders above all the other pieces. It was a popular winner for this year's prize!

Ian's work will be the front cover feature of our July/August 2014 issue, meanwhile, here's a taster of the work he does - none of it quite so large or elaborate as the piece that won though!

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 29 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
