We are proud to have sponsored this award at bctf since 1996 and take great pleasure in seeing so many of our previous winners now working as successful professional designer-makers in the British craft industry. Each year we select a Winner and Highly Commended from the exhibitors in the Newcomers Gallery at bctf. Judging is based on originality and skill in design and making, presentation and design of exhibition stand at bctf, business skills and ability. Both makers receive substantial promotional and marketing benefits as part of the Award, plus features in Craftsman craft&design Magazine with a special front cover promotion for the Winner.
craft&design Newcomer Award Winner at the British Craft Trade Fair 2009
When judging for our craft&design Newcomer Award at BCTF, we look for lots of things which collectively point to a successful future for the maker. Skill and craftsmanship in design and making are important of course, but so is presentation at the show, sensible pricing, a knowledge of the market and how the products fit into it, business skills and a plan for the future.
Daniel Kavanagh’s work really caught our eye for being professional, mature and particularly skilful; the classical lines of his ceramic pieces combined with his innovative use of bronze, create work which speaks of quality and craftsmanship. Daniel will receive 12 months marketing and promotional support from craft&design to the value of £3,000.
craft&design Highly Commended Newcomer at the British Craft Trade Fair 2009
For our craft&design Highly Commended Newcomer we chose mother and daughter team, Becks and Susan Jennings, who trade as Naive Textile Art. Their collection of functional and decorative Pincushions and Jewellery Boxes, created from found and natural materials, were well designed and beautifully made and offered buyers an original product at an attractive price.
Becks and Susan will receive marketing and promotional support from craft&design to the value of £1,800.
